- The major scope of the book is to develop critical thinking skills in students attending an introductory level chemistry course work. One may ask what is the need for a book such as this one, as there are numerous laboratory manuals available for introductory level chemistry course work? While the answer could be as simple as why not? the answer is rather not straight forward and requires at least few layers of explanation. One of them being, in a conventional or orthodox introductory college chemistry course, a large chunk of information learned involves abstract concepts. Designing wet chemical-based laboratories to tie the abstract concepts learned in lecture is not always feasible. For instance, while molarity is a vital concept, it is not feasible to develop a wet lab to understand the concept of molarity alone. A similar situation arises when students learn to convert between atoms and molecules. The feasibility aspect might allow some laboratory manual developers to design laboratories that may not align with a concept that is being taught in lecture. If students continue to notice a lack of connection between content presented in lecture and laboratory, they may get themselves in to a compartmentalized view about the content they learn. The third reason being the games presented in the book will provide sufficient training across various concepts and allow students to think critically about content being presented. The games presented in the book will not turn a student in to a technician, i.e., they will not be following steps or an established protocol to achieve a desired outcome. Fourth being, the book has taken into account well established learning strategies that have been published in peer reviewed scholarly work. The fifth being, the games presented in the book do not require investment towards buying chemicals or disposing waste thereof. Finally, all the games presented in the book were tested among students and found to have received positive feedback.
