Java Editorial Review

Concurrent Programming in Java: Design Principles and Pattern, 2nd Edition is a classic book on Java concurrency that is informative, coherent and recommended to any person new to concurrency in Java. Although the book is old, the principles in the book are still sound and it explains the details of the Java concurrency model. The book contains a lot of good concepts in concurrency, but it is structured and written in a way that can be tough to read. The book is academic in tone, and Doug Lea provides a thorough explanation of concurrent classes, applications, and frameworks. The book is not for novices or hobbyists but for programmers who need to design the guts of concurrent systems the "right" way and then implement them in Java, especially for extensible frameworks. Even though the book is a little dated, it still contains solid implementations of everything from simple mutexes to concurrent read-single write wrappers for Java collections available on the author's website.
